Stacking Cabinets

When I moved to a new house, I needed help stacking my custom-configured Ikea Sektion kitchen cabinets. Being new to the neighborhood, I didn’t know many people well enough yet to ask for their help with manual labor, and I wasn’t strong enough to lift the 2nd row of tall cabinets on top of the 1st row of short cabinets. It was time to work smarter and not harder.

  1. Remove as much weight as possible. Luckily, the Blum hardware on these Sektion cabinets makes that relatively easy.
  1. Lay the cabinet on its face with its bottom towards the bottom row of cabinets.
  1. Lift the bottom end of the 2nd-row cabinet on top of the 1st-row cabinet. It may be heavy, but at least it’s half the weight of lifting the entire cabinet straight up.
  1. Lift the top end of the cabinet and stand it up.
  1. Replace the doors and drawers, and then take a well-deserved break.
